Get well soon José!

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

We’ve been having some improvements done to the house recently, and over time we’ve been getting to know our two builders José and Rafa. After all, they have been here every day from 8am-6pm.

To give you an idea of the work they’ve been doing, here are two photographs of our new viewpoint (with great views of Arcos and beyond) taken during construction and after completion. In the image on the left you can see Rafa and José standing on the roof.
During After
Yesterday José fell from some scaffolding which he and Rafa had erected just outside the house. The cause was twofold. The scaffolding was unstable; José stepped on a bit he shouldn’t have.

He fell from quite a height, and must have tried to break the fall with his hands - one of which is broken. He has also hurt his back, but we still don’t know to what extent. Get well soon José!

Meanwhile, Rafa continues to work on the outside of the house. He’s doing his best to be polite to the many passers-by who ask about what happened to José yesterday.

Las Cruces de Mayo - May Crosses

Monday, May 8th, 2006

Each year, the first weekend in May sees an event in Arcos known as the Cruces de Mayo, or May Crosses.

Exclusive to the Old Quarter of town, the May Crosses are a series of crosses made out of bits of plastic drainpipe, oddly enough, peppered cruces de mayo - may crosses in Arcoswith lots of little holes into which flowers are inserted. The result is a pretty one, as you can see in this picture showing a cross with the flowers arranged in a diagonal pattern.

All the May Crosses are within 5 minutes of the house on foot, and the Town Hall always publishes a route you can follow to see all the crosses, which usually number about a dozen. As far as we know, anyone can make a cross and put it on show. We are thinking of doing one of our own next year.

It’s best to follow the route on Saturday from 7pm, or perhaps on Sunday morning - by Sunday afternoon the flowers are being plucked off by local children. And by Sunday evening, you’ll see a lot of naked crosses!
