The Traffic Lights

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

The Town Hall here in Arcos de la Frontera needs to protect and promote its beautiful Old Quarter, a main draw for tourists. At the same time it must take care of a local community which, though still vibrant, is steadily dwindling. In the way is The Traffic. A traffic light with what looks like a wonky pole

The streets are narrow, and the volume of traffic has risen over the years. It’s not uncommon to see tourists taking evasive action from passing cars.

In that case, why not cut the traffic completely, and simply pedestrianise the Old Quarter? If only it were that easy! Local people need to drive up to their houses, for a start. Then there’s the issue of deliveries to shops.

After plenty of consultation and discussion, the Town Hall has opted for traffic lights as a solution. Operational soon, these lights will allow more two-way traffic - and presumably some pedestrianisation. Let’s see if they make life any better for locals and tourists alike.

Thanks to all of you who have been asking about the health of José, our builder who fell from the scaffolding in May. The news is good! After a long period in hospital, José is back home in Arcos now, continuing his recuperation.
