The town fair is on!
Having been to the much better known April Fair (’Feria de Abril’) in Seville, I can confirm that the equivalent in Arcos (Sept 29 to Oct 2) is a far more enjoyable event. And that’s not just because I live here in this lovely town. These fairs are partly made up of a series of marquees, which are privately owned. The main problem I encountered last year in Seville was that no members of the public were allowed entry into the marquees there! They had all been booked out by exclusive groups (’peñas’) of one sort or another.
It’s different in Arcos. Much more of a family affair. Yesterday was Ladies’ Day and I joined a group of my dancing friends for a multi course meal in one of the marquees. Later on, the rest of the family came along, including Maggie who, as you can see in the photo, looks less than thrilled about the whole thing!
If you ever get the chance to visit Arcos over this period, come along to the fair. You’ll be welcomed like one of the locals. You’ll enjoy seeing all the colourful flamenco dresses and the spectacle of the horses parading up and down the main drag. And you’ll just love the friendly atmosphere.
